Seminar discussion of excerpt from "A Mathematician's Lament" by Paul Lockhart.
No homework.
Tuesday/Wednesday
Opened class with a written journal activity responding to a quoted piece from the seminar text. Building on our seminar, we then worked through 3 challenging tasks involving using right triangles, showing similarity to find an unknown length with very little information, and finally showing that every right triangle contains two smaller triangles similar to it.
Homework: none; quiz on Thursday/Friday, announced test on 9 Feb.
Thursday/Friday
Started with a quiz on similarity and using similarity ratios to solve problems of indirect measurement. Then worked on a dilation/coordinate/drawing task which involved dilations, reflections and translations of an image and writing a function that would do all of that simultaneously.
Homework: None; bring worksheet/graph paper back on Monday to finish drawings.
